Modern CCTV cameras are essentially small computers running an operating system and applications. That makes them vulnerable to hacking, and an attractive target for anyone trying to get into a network.
The risk
Attackers use sophisticated methods to breach networks, access data and exploit devices. Their aim is to get into sensitive networks, exploit weaknesses quickly and profit from it. An unprotected camera can be the way in.
Provision-ISR and Check Point
To tackle this, Provision-ISR partnered with cyber security experts Check Point Software Technologies. Check Point protects governments and businesses worldwide, with an industry-leading record for stopping malware and ransomware, and protects more than 100,000 organisations of all sizes.
Together they developed protection built specifically for IoT devices, making Provision-ISR one of the first CCTV manufacturers to build advanced cyber security into its products.
How the Nano Agent protects cameras
The Check Point IoT Protect Nano Agent gives Provision-ISR cameras built-in firmware security. It stops attackers from taking control of the device, adding malicious code, running remote code or disrupting normal operation.
Rather than relying on known signatures, it uses real-time anomaly detection at the operating system and application level, including:
- Anti-shell injection: checks shell commands to block malicious code or command injection.
- File monitoring: prevents files from being added or overwritten.
- Import-table protection: monitors API calls to stop function pointers being exploited.
- Control-flow integrity (CFI): maps every legitimate path the software can take and immediately stops anything that deviates from it.
- Dynamic memory protection: checks every memory allocation so malicious code can't use it.
